Was the GATE Program Really Just for Gifted Kids — Or Was Something Stranger Going On?

Leslie Juvin-Acker, J.D. reflects on her childhood experience in the GATE program, missing memories, unusual testing, psychic awakening, and the lingering question: was gifted education ever connected to something deeper?
My GATE Program Experience - A True Tale

I was in the GATE program as a child — the Gifted and Talented Education program designed for students who tested as intellectually advanced, creatively gifted, or academically exceptional. In many districts, children were selected through IQ testing, achievement scores, teacher recommendations, or other evaluations. A commonly cited gifted IQ threshold is around 130, though requirements varied by school district.
I was enrolled when I was about seven years old and stayed in until I was around ten.
And here’s the strange part:
I barely remember it.
Which is weird, because I have an excellent memory. I can usually recall my life experiences with deep emotion, nuance, and detail. But when it comes to GATE? There are gaps. Big ones.
I began the program while my family was stationed on an Army base in Berlin, right after the end of the Cold War. I remember being tested constantly — IQ tests, strange evaluations, and other assessments I didn’t fully understand.
I was placed in small groups with other gifted children. We studied advanced subjects, including ancient Egyptian culture, which I was completely obsessed with at that age. We went on field trips. We did exercises with cards. I was tested often for my “hearing.” And after some sessions, we were given a strange, bubblegum-tasting liquid to drink.
Yes. I know how that sounds.
The program continued after my family moved from Berlin to Jacksonville, where my father was stationed at NAS JAX. At one point, the school discussed placing me in more advanced studies, including astronomy. My mother, misunderstanding astronomy for astrology, panicked and pulled me out.
Which is hilarious now, because as an adult, I actually study and use astrology.
After that, my education became painfully ordinary. But throughout high school, teachers and mentors would quietly pull me aside and tell me the same thing: You are gifted. Don’t give up. Keep going.
They saw it in my public speaking. My writing. My interest in science. My love of history.
Then came 2012.
At the literal moment the clock struck midnight, I experienced a hemiplegic migraine and woke up with the worst flood of anxiety I had ever felt. From that moment forward, everything changed.
I began having visitations from deceased people, including people who had died by suicide. I could sense people’s thoughts. In the years leading up to that collapse — or awakening — I had already experienced strange glimpses: aliens, angels, crossed-over loved ones, vivid dreams, visitations, and encounters I could not explain.
For years, I had all but forgotten about GATE. Then I started seeing other former GATE children online describe similar memories: strange tests, sensory evaluations, missing memories, and psychic abilities.
And I started wondering:
Was the GATE program really just gifted education? Or was it something else?
Was it possible the government saw something in some of us before we saw it in ourselves?
My psychic abilities have shown me patterns in governments, institutions, and collapse. That is part of why I spent four and a half years researching legal history for my book, Bad Laws: How Legal History Reveals the American Character. Yes, I believe we are witnessing government and societal collapse. Wake up.
I have coached celebrities through spiritual breakdowns, advised top leaders, and worked with people in finance, food and beverage, entertainment, and global industries. Maybe all of this was preparing me for who I would eventually become — personally, spiritually, and professionally.
I explore these themes in my short story “In God We Trust — Mission: The Void,” featured in my short story collection Windows of the Soul, available to listen to for free on YouTube.
So now I want to know:
Were you in the GATE program?
Do you remember strange testing?
Missing memories?
Psychic abilities?
Tell me your story.
Let’s compare notes.
